It being Thanksgiving, I thought Kitty would enjoy an excursion, if only in spirit, to a few sights and smells of  San Francisco's Chinatown.

Yesterday was cold and wet, but her love and dedication was strong enough to venture out  to welcome me home.

Up until now, Kitty's favorite toy had been a knotted-up shoelace.   But being the creative-type, she has discovered a new toy and has invented a new game of skill to go along with it...     balancing the moon

Kitty got an official looking letter from the local junior college.   It said they know she's a cat, and warned her that if she tries to sign up for music classes again next semester, her enrollment form is going straight into the "circular file", no matter what euphemistic name she chooses to use.   So, for now, with only one cat in her band, it's pretty much a solo act.

Most everything can be explained scientifically, but I'm afraid that Kitty's inner workings go far beyond the realm of science.   Yes, this is your standard  cat eye,  but this is where science ends -- and something unconceivable, unrecognizable, unexplanable, and undefinable begins...

If I had to narrow it down and select Kitty's very best quality, it would have to be earnestness.   And yep, that's a pretty old fashioned word, but it describes her to a "T".   She is oh-so-serious about being the very best cat she can possibly be.   It all seems to come very naturally to her.

It seems as if she should know, so from time to time I check with Kitty about the prospects for peace.   She seems concerned and worried...

Yup, all it takes is a moist paw and a little scratching...     spit-shine

Kitty, the blog animal         July 4, 2005

Kitty has mastered some words better than others...   She has got kib-ble memorized and mastered, but her verbalization of canned-cat-food, and even her rendition of the simple one-syllable word corn needs some work...   I was suggesting that she really needs to get better at some of this basic education stuff, because the State Board of Education use an unfair system whereby they give all the cats a basic speech test the very first day of school.   If a cat shows up at school with limited verbalization skills, that particular cat is probably going to get pigeon-holed into the "slow-group".   My responsibility is to get Kitty motivated enough to really want to be part of the "fast-group"... -- oh you know -- the group with all the interesting cats -- the cats with bright future prospects as writers, artists, and philosophers...   But this is going to take some work, because right now, all Kitty wants to do is  hang and chill...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 3, 2005

this obsession about corn on the cob...
The true story behind how Kitty got so interested in her daily ration of corn can be traced back to a lovely and spirited British woman named Sandra.   I feel it is important to tell you that Sandra is pronounced "Saundra", even though it isn't spelled that way...   Sandra had a great British accent and a spirit for adventure, and she spent a good amount of her free time spooking around the local trails with her two dogs; Jedda and Little Bear, plus a great Black Lab named Arrow from up the street.   Anyway, Sandra loved not only to feed people, but her animals as well.   When Kitty came to live with me at the age of about 3, she came with a handwritten list of veggies that Kitty liked.   I've since lost that list, but I do remember most of it -- including bell peppers, carrots, peas and beans...   At the top of the list was corn, of course...   Kitty also came with a four-ounce jar of Blue Green Algae, but that is a story for another time...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 2, 2005

It is fun to see the reaction when I tell people how much Kitty enjoys her consistent diet of  corn on the cob...   Usually they give me a look of disbelief, but I kid you not, because Kitty really loves corn...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 1, 2005

No weed is safe...   For Kitty, her world is one big  salad bowl...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 30, 2005

Being a certified, confirmed and card-carrying bachelor, I think I have obtained the god-given right to live in squalor...   Yup, I am guilty of superfluous cobwebs and extraneous dust, but I am not going to take the rap for all of this cat hair all over the place...   Kitty is fastidious about keeping herself clean,  but when it comes to "tidying up" our messy abode, Kitty and I seem to agree -- we both rank the persuit of housekeeping at the same rather low priority level...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 29, 2005

Our local supermarket has 10 ears of sweet-corn on sale for $2.00 again this year, and although we are more concerned about quality than price, that is a deal that we just can't pass up...   Last year the ears were puny and underdeveloped, but Kitty has been  meditating and consulting  her higher-powers, so we're holding out more hope for this year's crop.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 27, 2005

We are all aware of our human limitations,  and I'm sure Kitty realizes her own--that she can't fly...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 26, 2005

We have been trying to keep the upper-hand in controlling Kitty's fleas with a daily flea combing, but yesterday afternoon I had to bring out the heavy-artillery;  "imidacloprid",  commonly known as Advantage®.   Oh yeah, it works alright -- works great, but the problem is that it has a uniquely horrible chemical smell that neither I nor Kitty like.   Oh, they say it is safe, especially when compared to the old-style flea treatments containing pyrethins, but the way I look at it, if Advantage® is poisonous enough to kill fleas, it has got to be toxic to cats, at least to some small degree.   But despite my fears and reluctance to use it, we are not going to live in a sea-of-fleas.   As I said, Kitty hates Advantage® just as much as I do, so applying it to her (between her shoulder blades where she can't reach to lick it) requires a bit of sneakiness.   As soon as she realizes that she has been "dosed" she usually will give me some of her best "sideways" looks -- and although I always apologize profusely, I'm sure she doesn't understand why I did such a horrible thing to her.   So again, Kitty, let me apologize publicly to you here in your blog.   I know you don't understand, Kitty, but I had to do it for your own good...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 25, 2005

I know that cats have hearing vastly superior to our own, but Kitty seems to be able to hear (or at least understand) what I am going to say before I can even say it.   For instance, up until this point I have always asked her "do you want some food", but now I find that all I have to say is "do" to get a resounding  "yeah"  out of her...   Amazing...   Simply amazing...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 24, 2005

Soft, loving, and  black and white...   Enough said...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 23, 2005

At Kittyland, we are into low maintenance gardening...   I've got some tomatoes growing, but Kitty is totally in charge of the  weeds...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 22, 2005

Ask me if anybody stopped by yesterday, and I'd say no, but Kitty would definitely have a different answer...   She can usually count on our local raccoon passing by just before sunrise...   Then at sunrise, the local birds wake up and start announcing it...   Then, a little later the insane little dog from next door will come into our yard for his daily constitutional...   And then, later when it seems safe, a faction of the local deer population will happen-by...   And the day wouldn't be complete without two or three standoffs between Kitty and the neighboring felines...
Yup, it's a lot to keep track of...   It's a BIG responsibility!     guardian

Kitty, the blog animal         June 21, 2005

A  soft and blurry  cat...   Either Kitty moved, or I moved the camera; or most likely--a combination of both...   Anyway, I really like this photo, but I imagine that Kitty could probably care less...   Oh, well...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 20, 2005

The mystery is where Kitty finds the time to do the variety of things she does, but now she has taken on the task of  gallery curator  in her own little art gallery.   The setting is sparse, and actually her gallery is located on a kitchen cabinet door, but her gallery is something she wants to do -- and after all, the rent is reasonable...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 19, 2005

A cat dies and goes to heaven.   God meets him at the gate and says, "You've been a good cat all these years.   Anything you desire, all you have to do is ask."   The cat says, "Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep on hardwood floors."   God says, "Say no more."   And instantly, a fluffy pillow appears.   The cat settles down onto it and falls asleep purring.

A few days later, 6 mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven.   God meets them at the gate with the same offer as the cat:   "You've been good mice all these years.   Anything you desire, all you have to do is ask."   The mice said, "All our life we've had to run.   We've been chased by cats, dogs, and even women with brooms.   If we could only have a pair of roller skates, we wouldn't have to run any more."   God says, "Say no more."   And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates.   They wheel away, delighted.

About a week later, God decides to check and see how the cat is doing.   The cat is sound asleep on his new pillow.   God gently nudges him awake and asks, "How are you doing? Are you happy here?"   The cat yawns and stretches and says, "Oh, I've never been happier, and those meals on wheels you've been sending over are great."     heavenly photo

Kitty, the blog animal         June 18, 2005

For the first three years of her life, Kitty had two dogs for roommates...   And while the older dog [who looked remarkably similar to the dog on the right in the photo] and Kitty got along lovingly, the younger dog [who looked remarkably similar to the dob on the left in the photo] delighted in driving Kitty to  distraction...

If skys are clear and temperatures reasonable, Kitty will enjoy a long afternoon soak in the sun...   Her  sunlit eyes  soak up nourishment...

Kitty has been taking a refresher course in method-acting at the local junior college, and she is proving to be quite a natural.     stage left

The winds were just right yesterday for Kitty to unfurl her  magenta flag.

When Kitty gives me this  particular look,  I know I am in trouble...   But fortunately, Kitty is quick to forgive.   She accepts my limitations...

A  moody  cat...   But the goings-on inside her head are unfathomable...

It's summertime...     And Kitty loves it...     It's right-up-her-street...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 9, 2005

And there are days when she is a  purple cat...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 8, 2005

I really shouldn't attempt to analize the complexities that seem to go on within Kitty's little head, but seeing her sleeping so pleasurably makes me rather curious, and almost jealous of her  other little world...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 7, 2005

Just as smart as Lassie,  and about twice as cute...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 6, 2005

Sometimes  during scratching there might be a fleeting moment when she will stop scratching long enough to recalculate her expended effort vs. amount of relief derived from that effort...
It's a graph with two lines -- one starts high and one starts low...
Where the lines intersect indicates a balanced work/benefit relationship.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 5, 2005

I was telling Kitty about carpenters in the old days, and how they had to use somewhat-stretchy fabric tape measures before the invention of steel tapes.   At the start of an important job they would all get together and adjust their measuring tapes so everybody's efforts would "jive"...
But here on the Kittyland  construction site,  every time Kitty measures something she insists that it be measured in "hairs"...   Oh you know -- a hair more this way, and off by a hair, and the ever popular half a hair... Big problems arise when measuring something long, instead of short...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 4, 2005

Dressing for the job is critical, but because it is so darned difficult to get Kitty to put on anything new, her employment options are pretty darned limited.   So,  bread and butter  for Kitty is holding court...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 3, 2005

If I hadn't had Kitty weighting me down, I think I would have fallen out of my chair.   Yesterday I heard Hoyt Amadeus Smith [KDFC-FM 102.1mHz] doing a promotion for today's Morning show, and for some reason (that hasn't been fully explained yet) he felt it necessary to mention that today is National Hug Your Cat Day.   Well, that was some pretty exciting news, but when I googled National Hug Your Cat Day, I found a wide range of dates assgined to the honorable day.   The general concensus seems to be that May 3rd is the day to hug your cat, but Hoyt Amadeus Smith seems to think the official date is today...   Someone else lists May 30th, so I am getting the impression that the designation is a little bit less official than the importance the title suggests.
Soooooo...   no matter what time or date...   It's  time to hug our cats!

Finally, the weather has warmed up and the pace has quickened, and both Kitty and I are off to our  blurry  destinations...   blurry, blurry, blurry...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 1, 2005

Yeah Kitty, I know how boring it must be when you have no appreciation for the sport...   From Kitty's point of view, floating around in a pond must not look like much fun at all...     ribbit ... ...     ribbit ... ...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 31, 2005

Oh sure, they would be fine  playmates  for about five minutes...   One would probably escape, but the other one just might become lunch...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 30, 2005

I showed this montage a few weeks ago, but I thought it was so funny (I am easily amused) that I would show it again.    play it again, Sam...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 29, 2005

Usually, our parent / child relationship couldn't be better, but when we are out in public she sometimes will pretend that she doesn't even know me... She is  way too cool...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 28, 2005

One of the most difficult engineering tasks is that of push-button design.
For now, we are going with the concept that it should be either  round or circular...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 27, 2005

I think if I stuffed a  double-A-battery into each ear, then poked her nose, I might be able to get her eyes to light-up and bug-out even more than they do normally...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 26, 2005

Along with warm weather comes the inevitable shedding.   We have cat hair,  here, there, and everywhere...   O.K., feel free to sing along...

Gimme a head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined
Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 25, 2005

Black can be deceiving -- perhaps black is the color of secrets...
Kitty's true color, revealed by the  afternoon sun,  is reddish-brown...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 24, 2005

Kitty is a talker.   Most of what she has to say is just err and rouw, but I swear she does have the concept of multiple syllables...   rouw-rouw is her word for kibble, and if she is in the proper mood, she will say it as I dole out her ration.   We try to work on pronunciation, and she tries her best to wrap her tongue around the difficult k and b, but actually, I think she has caught on to the concept of things and names.    little Ms Smarty Pants

Kitty, the blog animal         May 23, 2005

Most cats like to clean-up their faces after they eat.   I've been told that this is not for beauty, but rather it is an instinctual reminant of their past, when they found it prudent not to let their predators track them down by the smell of dinner on their face.   But to me, these days, the behavior looks an awful lot like a  stamp of approval...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 22, 2005

Finally we have nice weather, and Kitty is back-in-her-groove of enjoying the far-out warmth of the  afternoon sun.   Cool...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 21, 2005

I've succeeded in spoiling Kitty to the point that she knows I will cater to 99.9% of her demands...   But late last night she woke me out of a sound sleep with her insistant calls from the kitchen, and I tried to ignore her for a while, but I finally succumbed to her request.   And wouldn't you know it, she turned down my offering of kibble and made it crystal-clear that she wanted a taste of canned cat food instead.   Well, we have a rule against serving canned cat food in the middle of the night, so I had to read her Chapter XVIII, sub-section 3 of the Kittyland riot act, which clearly establishes and addresses her status as a  subserviant  creature...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 20, 2005

I chopped down all of the weeds around here a couple of weeks ago, but since then we've gotten some rain, and they have made a dandy recovery.   Kitty relies on those weeds for a bit of steathy camoflage...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 19, 2005

Kitty is a  wonderful listener...   And although I'm sure she doesn't understand most of the words, she is in complete alignment with most of what I say...   ...especially, the phrase:  "would you like some food?"

Kitty, the blog animal         May 18, 2005

Beyond photography, it is a question of which media...
Paint on canvas is an option, but really, the variety is limitless...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 17, 2005

If you visit Pestbouncer frequently, you might recognize this montage,  but I thought it was so cool that I should publish it again...   And if you'd like to see more silver ripples, please visit my Lagunitas Creek website...
I did take pictures today of Kitty devouring a little piece of fresh corn-on-the-cob, but I think we've all seen about enough of Kitty chomping down on an ear of corn.   But I will report that this was Kitty's first fresh corn in a few weeks (she has been having to make do with frozen), and judging from her exuberant enthusiasm, we are right back on track...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 16, 2005

The thing about Kitty is that she really doesn't understand all of the scientific ramifications of her world, but she does have a pretty good grasp of the basics.   For example, she knows all of the variations of sunlight, and what to do with each one...   Here she is, enjoying  afternoon light...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 15, 2005

To the casual observer, it would appear as if Kitty has an  uneventful life, but that is only because she is so darned good at her job that she makes what she does look easy.   It may look like almost anybody could do the job she does, but it takes not only talent, but persistence.   Brains too... Being a cat is a 24/7 type of job with unimaginably large responsibilities.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 14, 2005

We saw cabin fever come, and now it has gone...   Kitty is finally spending more time outdoors...   Here she is, enjoying a  blade of grass...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 13, 2005

Kitty's attitude is: "call her anything, but don't call her late for lunch"...
So, I think we're just going to go with  Green Eyes...   That seems to fit.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 12, 2005

I'm still not completely sure if Kitty is  more Blue  than she is Blur, but perhaps Kitty should be hyphenated and then she could be the Blue-Blur.   I just don't know...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 11, 2005

Kitty may be a tuxedo-cat, but she certainly is no  stuffed shirt...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 10, 2005

Kitty has already decyphered this morning's strange and cryptic message in the sky.   Today it was a friendly message, but hopefully she will give me the  heads up  if I ever need to take cover...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 9, 2005

The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco has a crew of  weeping ladies  sculpted by Ulric Ellerhusen in 1915 for the Panama Pacific Exposition.   The sad figures are said to represent the melancholy of life without art, and the way Ellerhusen decided to depict this was to leave them clinging to the corners and rooftops of the buildings from which they were denied...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 8, 2005

From the window yesterday afternoon, I noticed Kitty  hunkered down  with a garden full of Photoshop phlowers...

Blurry the Cat???
It might be a little late to rename Kitty, but her name is so generic that I was sort of looking for somethig else that might stick...
So, I Googled for names of cats, and I was thinking something along the lines of Blue or Blur, but here is a short list of the variations:
Blue, Blue Baby, Blue Bell, Blue Boy, Blue Comet, Blue Eyes, Blue Monday, Blue Sapphire, Blueberry, Blueberry Muffin, Blues, Bluella, Blur, Blurry, Blurry Kitty, Blurt, Bluster, Bluto, Blynken, Bo, Bo Didley, Bo-Bo, Bob, Bob Dole [ yes, someone named their cat Bob Dole ], Bobberdobber, Bobbie, Bobbie Joe, Bobbin, Bobby, and last but not least; Bobby Socks.

As  two ships passing in the night
So quietly neath the stars soft light;
Our paths cross but now and then.
Reaching out, seeking one another again.

We say hello and then we part,
Knowing we've shared a piece of our heart.
Some friendships stay and sadly some go.
My prayers remain steady hoping ours will grow.

I ache when you're hurting,
I cry when you're sad.
Wanting to comfort and hold you so bad.
Know that I'm waiting here, with open arms,
To share all your troubles and relish your charms.

I have nothing to offer but the soul of a friend,
Strong shoulders to lean on that don't easily bend.
I offer these freely with no strings attached,
For in caring and sharing you'll not meet my match.

So on some long and lonely night
When nothing seems to go just right
Close your eyes and think of me,
Under the moon's glow is where I'll be...
