Not to start telling Army stories, but back in the summer of 1969 I spent two months of absolute hell in probably the most god-awful place on earth named "Fort Bliss".   It was anything but bliss! genuine bliss...

For Kitty's toys, we make-do with what is at hand.   A wadded-up piece of paper is always popular.   But actually, Kitty, the animal, herself, converts into a fun and exciting toy, and she doesn't even need batteries.
Of course, the most fun feature is her  stretchable ears.

I noticed Kitty watching me intently as I was getting out some frozen string-beans, and even though I am aware that offering "human food" to a cat is not a good idea, I gave her one and she let me know, dramatically, that yes, she absolutely loves string-beans. bon appitite

The politicians of today could learn a valuable lesson from our cats...   Cats call it leadership by example, and their only requirement is that we lowly humans be patient and observe.   Obvioiusly, naps are an integral part of leadership.    doing her best impression of Senator Kennedy

play it again, Sam

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 30, 2005

I showed this montage a few weeks ago, but I thought it was so funny (I am easily amused) that I would show it again.    play it again, Sam...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 29, 2005

Usually, our parent / child relationship couldn't be better, but when we are out in public she sometimes will pretend that she doesn't even know me... She is  way too cool...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 28, 2005

One of the most difficult engineering tasks is that of push-button design.
For now, we are going with the concept that it should be either  round or circular...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 27, 2005

I think if I stuffed a  double-A-battery into each ear, then poked her nose, I might be able to get her eyes to light-up and bug-out even more than they do normally...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 26, 2005

Along with warm weather comes the inevitable shedding.   We have cat hair,  here, there, and everywhere...   O.K., feel free to sing along...

Gimme a head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined
Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair...

Black can be deceiving -- perhaps black is the color of secrets...
Kitty's true color, revealed by the  afternoon sun,  is reddish-brown...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 24, 2005

Kitty is a talker.   Most of what she has to say is just err and rouw, but I swear she does have the concept of multiple syllables...   rouw-rouw is her word for kibble, and if she is in the proper mood, she will say it as I dole out her ration.   We try to work on pronunciation, and she tries her best to wrap her tongue around the difficult k and b, but actually, I think she has caught on to the concept of things and names.    little Ms Smarty Pants

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 23, 2005

Most cats like to clean-up their faces after they eat.   I've been told that this is not for beauty, but rather it is an instinctual reminant of their past, when they found it prudent not to let their predators track them down by the smell of dinner on their face.   But to me, these days, the behavior looks an awful lot like a  stamp of approval...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 22, 2005

Finally we have nice weather, and Kitty is back-in-her-groove of enjoying the far-out warmth of the  afternoon sun.   Cool...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 21, 2005

I've succeeded in spoiling Kitty to the point that she knows I will cater to 99.9% of her demands...   But late last night she woke me out of a sound sleep with her insistant calls from the kitchen, and I tried to ignore her for a while, but I finally succumbed to her request.   And wouldn't you know it, she turned down my offering of kibble and made it crystal-clear that she wanted a taste of canned cat food instead.   Well, we have a rule against serving canned cat food in the middle of the night, so I had to read her Chapter XVIII, sub-section 3 of the Kittyland riot act, which clearly establishes and addresses her status as a  subserviant  creature...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 20, 2005

I chopped down all of the weeds around here a couple of weeks ago, but since then we've gotten some rain, and they have made a dandy recovery.   Kitty relies on those weeds for a bit of steathy camoflage...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 19, 2005

Kitty is a  wonderful listener...   And although I'm sure she doesn't understand most of the words, she is in complete alignment with most of what I say...   ...especially, the phrase:  "would you like some food?"

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 18, 2005

Beyond photography, it is a question of which media...
Paint on canvas is an option, but really, the variety is limitless...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 17, 2005

If you visit Pestbouncer frequently, you might recognize this montage,  but I thought it was so cool that I should publish it again...   And if you'd like to see more silver ripples, please visit my Lagunitas Creek website...
I did take pictures today of Kitty devouring a little piece of fresh corn-on-the-cob, but I think we've all seen about enough of Kitty chomping down on an ear of corn.   But I will report that this was Kitty's first fresh corn in a few weeks (she has been having to make do with frozen), and judging from her exuberant enthusiasm, we are right back on track...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 16, 2005

The thing about Kitty is that she really doesn't understand all of the scientific ramifications of her world, but she does have a pretty good grasp of the basics.   For example, she knows all of the variations of sunlight, and what to do with each one...   Here she is, enjoying  afternoon light...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 15, 2005

To the casual observer, it would appear as if Kitty has an  uneventful life, but that is only because she is so darned good at her job that she makes what she does look easy.   It may look like almost anybody could do the job she does, but it takes not only talent, but persistence.   Brains too... Being a cat is a 24/7 type of job with unimaginably large responsibilities.

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 14, 2005

We saw cabin fever come, and now it has gone...   Kitty is finally spending more time outdoors...   Here she is, enjoying a  blade of grass...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 13, 2005

Kitty's attitude is: "call her anything, but don't call her late for lunch"...
So, I think we're just going to go with  Green Eyes...   That seems to fit.

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 12, 2005

I'm still not completely sure if Kitty is  more Blue  than she is Blur, but perhaps Kitty should be hyphenated and then she could be the Blue-Blur.   I just don't know...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 11, 2005

Kitty may be a tuxedo-cat, but she certainly is no  stuffed shirt...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 10, 2005

Kitty has already decyphered this morning's strange and cryptic message in the sky.   Today it was a friendly message, but hopefully she will give me the  heads up  if I ever need to take cover...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 9, 2005

The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco has a crew of  weeping ladies  sculpted by Ulric Ellerhusen in 1915 for the Panama Pacific Exposition.   The sad figures are said to represent the melancholy of life without art, and the way Ellerhusen decided to depict this was to leave them clinging to the corners and rooftops of the buildings from which they were denied...

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 8, 2005

From the window yesterday afternoon, I noticed Kitty  hunkered down  with a garden full of Photoshop phlowers...

Blurry the Cat???
It might be a little late to rename Kitty, but her name is so generic that I was sort of looking for somethig else that might stick...
So, I Googled for names of cats, and I was thinking something along the lines of Blue or Blur, but here is a short list of the variations:
Blue, Blue Baby, Blue Bell, Blue Boy, Blue Comet, Blue Eyes, Blue Monday, Blue Sapphire, Blueberry, Blueberry Muffin, Blues, Bluella, Blur, Blurry, Blurry Kitty, Blurt, Bluster, Bluto, Blynken, Bo, Bo Didley, Bo-Bo, Bob, Bob Dole [ yes, someone named their cat Bob Dole ], Bobberdobber, Bobbie, Bobbie Joe, Bobbin, Bobby, and last but not least; Bobby Socks.

          Kitty, the blog animal         May 6, 2005

As  two ships passing in the night
So quietly neath the stars soft light;
Our paths cross but now and then.
Reaching out, seeking one another again.

We say hello and then we part,
Knowing we've shared a piece of our heart.
Some friendships stay and sadly some go.
My prayers remain steady hoping ours will grow.

I ache when you're hurting,
I cry when you're sad.
Wanting to comfort and hold you so bad.
Know that I'm waiting here, with open arms,
To share all your troubles and relish your charms.

I have nothing to offer but the soul of a friend,
Strong shoulders to lean on that don't easily bend.
I offer these freely with no strings attached,
For in caring and sharing you'll not meet my match.

So on some long and lonely night
When nothing seems to go just right
Close your eyes and think of me,
Under the moon's glow is where I'll be...

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 23, 2005

I thought that as long as Kitty is going to inadvertantly impede my progress by insisting on the occupation of my lap, I would break promises and once again do horrible and tastless things to her.    twisted sister

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 22, 2005

As a result of yesterday's stupid blog entry, I gave Kitty my  apologies  and promised to park-it on such lame Photoshop attempts for a while...

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 21, 2005

I'm afraid that all of those talks I had with Kitty about the dangers of doing drugs didn't sink in.   As you may or may not know, yesterday was "4/20", also known as national stoner's day...   Lets not make this a habit, Kitty.

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 20, 2005

I'm afraid that Kitty is a little less human  than I make her out to be...   After all, she seems to have no goals, no aspirations, nor people-like plans...   Yet obviously she has arrived.   Perhaps she could sell tickets...

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 19, 2005

It looks like the start of another golden-speckled day, and my little four-footed snooze-alarm  has persuaded me into consciousness.   As usual, her technique starts with a cold foot to the forehead, followed a few minutes later by a love-bite on the pointy-end of my elbow.   Jeeezzz...

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 18, 2005

Not to be disrespectful to the Catholic Church, but Kitty has been taking up some of the recent slack in the  papal visitation  department.   Normally, she just restricts her activities to catechisms, but ever since the Pope died she has been generously granting audiences and giving little homilies...   God bless Kitty...   God bless you all...   Hare Krishna and Amen...

          Kitty, the blog animal         April 17, 2005

Yes, Kitty, you are the  tomato of my eye...
I know I don't say it often enough, but you are the love of my life...

Birdwatching  is generally thought of as a respectable scientific endeavor, but Kitty sees it as a blood sport...   a free lunch...   a bit of grub...   a chance to pounce on the distracted...   Yet, there must be other times when she is in upmost admiration and awe of a bird's ability to fly...
And it must also bother her terribly that she can't...

The PBS presentation of  Jane Goodall,  and Coco the gorilla; to whom she succeeded in teaching sign-language, always brings me half-way to tears. The beauty and amazing success of their inter-species communication boggles the mind...   You probably already know the story, but Coco, having failed at mating, was given a kitten so she could fulfill her needs to be a mother.   As I mentioned, the story is guaranteed to bring me half-way to tears, so I usually have to get up and switch the TV off...
But Jane Goodall has done a lot more primate research than just her work with Coco.   I've discovered a GREAT summary of her primate research achievements in Gombe, Africa, 1969-1997,   over at:   http://www.webster.edu/~woolflm/janegoodall.html

Nothing can spoil an Easter-egg-hunt  faster than rain...   And we weren't quick enough, so by the time we found them all, the designs had all turned to mushy abstracts, and at least one of us was totally soaked.   This will probably be remembered as Kittyland's soggiest Easter-egg-hunt, ever.

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 27, 2005

Kitty got to experience frozen corn-off-the-cob for the very first time yesterday morning, and now she is thoroughly thrilled at the concept!   Somehow, up until now, I've just assumed that (frozen or fresh) corn-on-the-cob is what she preferred.   This erroneous assumption was based purely on how much fun Kitty seems to be having when tearing into corn-on-the-cob, but I stand corrected:   corn-off-the-cob  is cool.

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 26, 2005

Corn time  at Kittyland is a very special event...   Kitty has me on a strict schedule, and she knows that when I am dressed and ready to go out the door, there is absolutely no question about it:   She WILL be served her little piece of thawed corn-on-the-cob.   But strict schedules need to be "stuck-to", so what happens if we run out of corn?   Could this happen?   Do we have enough on-hand, or are we perilously close to running out?   So anyway, there I was, down at the supermarket, and the worst had struck--they were out of frozen corn cobettes.   Worse yet, fresh corn this time of year is 79 cents and looks horrible...   So anyway, after throwing a tantrum in the supermarket isle, I decided to get a package of frozen corn-off-the-cob, so it should be amusing to see Kitty's reaction to this new style of corn when she is served later this morning...

On the 18th and 19th of April 1775, Paul Revere took his famous midnight ride from Charlestown to Lexington giving warning of approaching British troops from Boston.    In our KittyBLOG version of history, his informant reportedly used the ears of his cat, not lanterns, for signalling  "one if by land, and two if by sea"...

I gave Kitty a thorough flea combing yesterday, and I was surprised to find any fleas at all, because I just gave her an application of Advantage® two weeks or so ago...   I hate flea combing, but it has to be done, and I should do it more often...   That's the plan...
Kitty absolutely loves being flea combed, and she sits regally and patiently until she decides  enough is enough...

It would be incorrect to say that Kitty never travels anyplace.   But her method of transport seems to be quite different than ours...    adventure

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 13, 2005

Not to start telling Army stories, but back in the summer of 1969 I spent two months of absolute hell in probably the most god-awful place on earth named "Fort Bliss".   It was anything but bliss!      genuine bliss...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 12, 2005

I admire Kitty because she seems to have every aspect of her life in some kind of perfect balance...   Sort of like  yin and yang,  hot and cold, empty and full, there and not there, pain and bliss, living and dying,  etcetera...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 11, 2005

If you remember reading Little Orphan Annie you probably have one-foot-in-the-grave, but the comic strip opened with Annie in an orphanage right out of Dickens.   Luckily, Annie met Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks; a self-made millionaire who introduced her to a life of ease and comfort.   Unfortunately, she and Warbucks were soon separated, and Annie had to make her own way in the world with her companion -- a large, nondescript dog named Sandy.   Daddy Warbucks occasionally resurfaced, but then again disappeared, so Annie bounced back and forth between rags and riches.   But the thing about Annie was that her spirit was unquenchable as she buckled down and did whatever it was that needed to be done; foiling any number of thugs, politicians, and other crooks along the way.   Curiously, Harold Gray, the strip's author, gave Annie only blank circles for eyes.   Many think this was because he wasn't a skilled artist, but I think he was trying to get us to  look more deeply  into her inner-being...

I've been pretending that I didn't know, because for some reason Kitty hasn't wanted me to know...   But a while back I decided to confirm my suspicions, so I set up a hidden camera to find out exactly what goes on around here while I am away...   Her secret is revealed...    She can fly!

When I was a kid, and that was many years ago, our family had a dog which we named Mickey after the famous mouse.   Mickey was black and white, similar to Kitty, but his distinguishing trademark was his floppy right ear.   Kitty is not impressed...      family portraits

Most of us, including Kitty, feel a bit safer in our own enveloping  bubbles.

Nobody believes me, so I've stopped telling non-cat-lovers about our Monday morning ritual of  winding-up Kitty  for the week...

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, "If only Kitty could but get a whack at that —
We'd put up even money now, with Kitty at the bat."

But Flynn preceded Kitty, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat;
For there seemed but little chance of Kitty getting to the bat.

But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and they saw what had occurred,
There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Kitty, mighty Kitty, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Kitty's manner as she stepped into her place;
There was pride in Kitty's bearing and a smile lit Kitty's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, she lightly doffed her hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt  'twas Kitty at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on her as she rubbed her hands with dirt.
Five thousand tongues applauded when she wiped them on her shirt.
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance flashed in Kitty's eye, a sneer curled Kitty's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Kitty stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped —
"That ain't my style," said Kitty. "Strike one!" the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted some one on the stand;
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Kitty raised her hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Kitty's visage shone;
She stilled the rising tumult; she bade the game go on;
She signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
But Kitty still ignored it, and the umpire said "Strike two!"

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered "Fraud!"
But one scornful look from Kitty and the audience was awed.
They saw her face grow stern and cold, they saw her muscles strain,
And they knew that Kitty wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer has fled from Kitty's lip, the teeth are clenched in hate;
She pounds with cruel violence her bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Kitty's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere all are laughing, and little children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Kitty has struck out.

During the winter we are able to keep Kitty's flea population down by an occasional flea-combing, but now it is starting to warm up and we are losing the upper-hand on the situation.   And as much as I hate putting a horrible poisonous insecticide on her, I finally got up enough nerve to give her an application of Advantage®.   They say that Advantage® is much safer than the old fashioned pyrethins, but from the horrid smell of it, I just don't know.   One thing for sure is that Advantage® really works!   I've already profusely apologized, and even though she gave me the untrusting eye  for a while, she is back on my lap as I write this, and it seems as if all is forgiven...   And again, I'm sorry, but I had to do it...

Kitty never reads the newspaper, doesn't vote, has never been to school, and she never really goes anywhere; so Kitty has grown-up in a relatively sheltered environment.   So, it may have been a mistake, but I thought I would expand her horizons by explaining a little about the complete and total mess this sorry world finds itself...     Now she is very, very worried.

Yes Kitty, you must remember...
It's our warm and illuminating friend from last year,  the sun...
