          Kitty, the blog animal         March 10, 2005

I've been pretending that I didn't know, because for some reason Kitty hasn't wanted me to know...   But a while back I decided to confirm my suspicions, so I set up a hidden camera to find out exactly what goes on around here while I am away...   Her secret is revealed...    She can fly!

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 9, 2005

When I was a kid, and that was many years ago, our family had a dog which we named Mickey after the famous mouse.   Mickey was black and white, similar to Kitty, but his distinguishing trademark was his floppy right ear.   Kitty is not impressed...      family portraits

Most of us, including Kitty, feel a bit safer in our own enveloping  bubbles.

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 7, 2005

Nobody believes me, so I've stopped telling non-cat-lovers about our Monday morning ritual of  winding-up Kitty  for the week...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 6, 2005

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, "If only Kitty could but get a whack at that —
We'd put up even money now, with Kitty at the bat."

But Flynn preceded Kitty, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat;
For there seemed but little chance of Kitty getting to the bat.

But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and they saw what had occurred,
There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Kitty, mighty Kitty, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Kitty's manner as she stepped into her place;
There was pride in Kitty's bearing and a smile lit Kitty's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, she lightly doffed her hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt  'twas Kitty at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on her as she rubbed her hands with dirt.
Five thousand tongues applauded when she wiped them on her shirt.
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance flashed in Kitty's eye, a sneer curled Kitty's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Kitty stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped —
"That ain't my style," said Kitty. "Strike one!" the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted some one on the stand;
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Kitty raised her hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Kitty's visage shone;
She stilled the rising tumult; she bade the game go on;
She signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
But Kitty still ignored it, and the umpire said "Strike two!"

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered "Fraud!"
But one scornful look from Kitty and the audience was awed.
They saw her face grow stern and cold, they saw her muscles strain,
And they knew that Kitty wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer has fled from Kitty's lip, the teeth are clenched in hate;
She pounds with cruel violence her bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Kitty's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere all are laughing, and little children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Kitty has struck out.

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 5, 2005

During the winter we are able to keep Kitty's flea population down by an occasional flea-combing, but now it is starting to warm up and we are losing the upper-hand on the situation.   And as much as I hate putting a horrible poisonous insecticide on her, I finally got up enough nerve to give her an application of Advantage®.   They say that Advantage® is much safer than the old fashioned pyrethins, but from the horrid smell of it, I just don't know.   One thing for sure is that Advantage® really works!   I've already profusely apologized, and even though she gave me the untrusting eye  for a while, she is back on my lap as I write this, and it seems as if all is forgiven...   And again, I'm sorry, but I had to do it...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 4, 2005

Here she is...    Recharging her  solar-powered  batteries...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 3, 2005

I often take a deep look into her eyes...   And I usually see  tranquility...

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 2, 2005

Kitty never reads the newspaper, doesn't vote, has never been to school, and she never really goes anywhere; so Kitty has grown-up in a relatively sheltered environment.   So, it may have been a mistake, but I thought I would expand her horizons by explaining a little about the complete and total mess this sorry world finds itself...     Now she is very, very worried.

          Kitty, the blog animal         March 1, 2005

Yes Kitty, you must remember...
It's our warm and illuminating friend from last year,  the sun...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 28, 2005

To keep out the local squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and possums this time of year, we lock Kitty's window-mounted cat door at night.   If she needs to go out, Kitty has learned to signal me by rattling the door.   It is a great system,  but leave it to Kitty,  she has discovered how to expand on the concept...   Last night I heard her rattling the door, but when I got up to open it for her she was standing in front of her dining area with a hungry look.   I am her pawn, but nevertheless, she is pretty darned smart.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 27, 2005

Awake,  and just in time for a slow yawn and a little grooming...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 26, 2005

Each morning I ask Kitty if she has anything exciting planned for the day,   and each evening I ask her if she did anything fun during the day...
And I never have been able to get much of an answer out of her...
But when the situtation presents itself, Kitty will certainly be ready...
Here she is, waiting for the next adventure by hiding out in the vines...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 25, 2005

Most of us can remember way back to when we were much smaller...   Everything else in the world was, indeed, much larger...     Kitty & poppy

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 24, 2005

Usually, if someone gives me  "this kind of look",  it means that I am doing or saying something incredibly stupid.   Fortunately, Kitty has a tolerant and forgiving soul...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 23, 2005

Obviously,  light enters,  but what happens after that remains a mystery.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 22, 2005

If you old enough to remember  Felix-the-Cat,  you might remember the scenes in which Felix, starting with nothing, drew himself...   Felix used a pen...   Kitty could probably use her tail...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 21, 2005

This time of year Kitty doesn't get to spend much time outside.   In June you will find her rolling in the weeds and taking an occasional  chomp...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 20, 2005

In an attempt to stave off the ravages of cabin fever, Kitty and I have been looking through warm and sun-filled pictures from  last summer...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 19, 2005

Realistically; even if we could dramatically increase her flapping speed, her ears just don't have enough surface area to achieve  lift off and flight.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 18, 2005

I probably spend too much time thinking about this, but the question is
if animals realize and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings
and after observing Kitty, it's fairly obvious that yes, they certainly do...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 17, 2005

I need to find a way to tell Kitty that she would have a better chance of attracting and catching birds if she dressed up in a bird suit and made bird-like chirping sounds...     birds in motion

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 16, 2005

It is her world; filled with colorful shapes, and made vibrant by her love...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 15, 2005

Kitty arrived in this world under the auspices of instinct.   Fortunately, she uses instinct only as a guide.   Her life is quite  colorful and freeform...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 14, 2005

Even beautiful colors, such as  purple and violet,  lack the ability to add to her already maxed-out beauty...   And she is such a little lover ♥ ♥ ♥

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 13, 2005

Kitty and I watched this door,  first with curiosity, but then in horror  as we finally realized that scores of tourists were entering, but none were coming back out.   Kitty got some ideas, made a few sketches, and now she thinks a similar system could easily be devised for catching mice and birds.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 12, 2005

Here she is, our amateur scientist, immersed in her study of  ripples...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 11, 2005

Kitty has a  square heart  because square hearts are easier to draw...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 10, 2005

Kitty researches things thoroughly, and she likes to get her facts straight, so ever since I told her that water in the northern hemisphere exhibits a propensity towards a counter-clockwise flow when going down the drain, she has been spending time on the coast checking the information...
Kitty's preliminary report indicates that the direction of water going down the drain, in either hemisphere, has more to do with the shape of the drain or pre-existing movement in the water.   But the effect, known as the Coriolis Effect  does exist as a function of earth rotation, but only in large atmospheric events such as hurricanes (and storms between Kitty's ears).

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 9, 2005

Kitty has  lofty ambitions  about moving up to major-league ball.   Until now, she has been the star of our local anamilistic team; The Scrappers, but now she seems to think that she has enough talent to do something really special for The Giants this year...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 8, 2005

It isn't much, but Kitty does bring in a little cash by collecting coins from guests at the front door.     meter maid

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 7, 2005

Prior to closing,  someplace else was something else.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 6, 2005

Today, with the aid of Photoshop and her supernatural powers, Kitty visits some very pretty wildflowers.   I found these last Fall along the banks of the  Lagunitas Creek.

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 5, 2005

I'll have to recind everything I said about Kitty having grown out of her days of hunting and killing, because I found a sparrow strewn across the bathroom floor when I got home yesterday.   I knew it wouldn't do any good to yell and scream at her, but I got even by bringing out the dreaded and ghastly vaccuum cleaner.   She took a hike.     lip smacking good

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 4, 2005

Only in my imagination can Kitty  balance the moon on her nose,  but she does know some other neat tricks.   Her paw-eye coordination is exceptionally keen, and she can catch and bat wadded-up Post-it notes like a major-league pro.   She can also "parrot" a word -- and that word is kibble...   We've been working on this since "day one", and yes, if she is sufficiently happy and excited, she WILL say kibble, in her own way...   Of course, her mouth isn't set-up to form the perfect "k" or "b", so the "k" sounds more like a "w" and the "b" sounds more like a Spanyard rolling his "r"'s, but I think it is an amazing trick!   For her reward, beyond the kibble, I always tell her how darned smart she is...   And she is...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 3, 2005

Well, today folks, I thought we would explore the REAL story behind the  Pestbouncer  domain name.   Well, Pestbouncer began as the name of a potential online business that intended to sell ultrasonic rodent repellers, but before that enterprise ever got off the ground I determined that ultrasonic rodent repellers were of rather questionable effectiveness, so the project was scrapped.   I still had a year to go on the domain name registration, so to cover my $35 loss I decided that I would use it for the blog I had been planning to write about Kitty.   After all, pestbouncer sort of fit Kitty, because at the time she was at the top-of-her-game catching mice, rats, and (sorry about this) birds.   So there you have the story.   But you know how it is, the older you get--the less crime you have the energy to commit...   So, it has been quite a while since Kitty slaughtered her last mouse.   I'm sure she remembers how much fun hunting used to be, but these days she settles for her meat ration out of a tin...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 2, 2005

Well, today folks, I thought we would go way back into the archives to the very first KittyBLOG entry, which sort of explains how  Kitty  arrived here:

December 23, 2002
Kitty came to live with Don about six or seven years ago.
She is a pleasure in my life, and I think we love each other very much.
THE DAY KITTY ARRIVED, UPSTAIRS...
A bright Saturday morning brought a "pint sized" Jolie D. to my door -- out of breath and obviously excited with great news -- they were making a trip to the animal shelter to pick out a kitty.   Jolie, being quite the detail minded organizer, had phoned for all the particulars, so when she mentioned that they also had a black and white kitty, my reaction was immediate, and I strongly suggested that she get that one.
A few years later, (and these things happen), Jolie and the other upstairs folks moved on, but Kitty, already knowing me pretty well, sort of moved in with me here, downstairs...

          Kitty, the blog animal         February 1, 2005

I'm not sure if it is pure affection, or maybe it is just her job; but whatever her motivation, Kitty thinks the primary place to be is on my lap.   Usually it all works out, but yesterday I finally had to banish her.   She complained loudly and gave my hand a soft bite, which is completely unacceptable behavior around here.   I sternly read her the riot act, and for a short while I think she may have understood who was top-dog.     intimidated

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 31, 2005

I know it is kind of silly, but I am always trying to get a reaction out of Kitty by showing her pictures of herself.   And she WILL look, and I'm willing to bet that she realizes that the images are indeed of herself, but she never reacts in any form or fashion.   So, today I thought it might be safe enough to show this cute photo of her--which because of the angle, kind of makes her look kind of, err..., fat.   Sorry, Kitty...     fat cat

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 30, 2005

Most everything can be explained scientifically, but I'm afraid that Kitty's inner workings go far beyond the realm of science.   Yes, this is your standard  cat eye,  but this is where science ends -- and something unconceivable, unrecognizable, unexplanable, and undefinable begins...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 29, 2005

I've heard this occasionally happens with human/human couples, but over the years our  human/feline relationship  has grown to a point where we are much more in love than when we first met.   This morning I got a good morning kiss on the tip of my nose.   All is well in Kittyland...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 28, 2005

We went way back to summertime, and we found this nice photo of  two tomatoes;  one naked with red skin, and the other dressed in a tuxedo...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 27, 2005

A casual glance is nice, but if you spend two or three minutes looking into her eyes, you too should arrive at a peaceful and  speechless  place...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 26, 2005

Kitty spends a lot of time sleeping, and it's difficult to calculate just how much time she actually spends dreaming -- but I'm pretty sure that when she does dream, she goes to some  very pleasant places...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 25, 2005

Here she is, just being  silly...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 24, 2005

After a few years of living with Kitty, three logical questions have risen: 1:) Who is this cat?,   2:) Where has she been?,   and 3:) The actual number of covert and/or mercenary operations she has under her belt.
obscured by camoflage...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 23, 2005

Kitty has been practicing, and now she can pronounce the word "kibble" remarkably accurately.   The letter "k" is problematic and comes out as an "r", but she seems to be getting really close with her "b"'s.     Kitty speaks

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 22, 2005

Cabin fever  is in full swing around here at Kittyland...
And Kitty is bored out of her skull, so to speak...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 21, 2005

But mainly, to sum it up, she is basically a  ball of fur,  pretty much...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 20, 2005

Kitty's m.o. is to "spook" around, and then to "flop" in the exact spot where she leaves off.   Really, it's not very exciting.   And if you were to press her for more details, odds are she would reply with a  blah...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 19, 2005

Beyond and between the various parts of her - is nothing but  whitespace.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 18, 2005

On alternate days of the week, and in months with an "r",  Kitty bravely submits to the "upside-down treatment", allowing herself to be picked up, backwards and upside down.   I can actually get a melodious variety of hollow sounds by slapping her belly.  Kitty stretches out and seems to enjoy it...   Here she is, our little feline  bongo...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 17, 2005

Kitty has been looking for some kind of  perceptual employment,  but I don't know about this new scheme about charging people a quarter to look deeply into her eyes.   Actually, she now owns all of my quarters, but I just don't think many other people, unlike me, are going to want to spend twenty-five cents on excursions to the front-sides of her brain...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 16, 2005

It was past 4 in the p.m., and in order to remind me that her "blog" still hadn't been written, she did a little improvisational jump and dance to show me, and yes, to demonstrate the time.    kitty clock

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 15, 2005

And yup, the Kittyland kitty-camera is still broken, but in the archives I found this picture of my little roommate,  communicating with God.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 14, 2005

I admire her lofty ambitions, but chances of succeeding in this are slim.   Kitty has decided on a career modelling for pet food advertising.  I tried to explain that the competition would be fierce, and that she would have to compete against such veterans as Morris, and that she would be away from home for weeks at a time, flying coast to coast, etcetera...   But she really wants to do it.   She wants to be the  cat on the bag...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 13, 2005

Our camera has broken, so we've been going back through Kitty's old photos and we found this.   I have absolutely no idea of what has caught her eye, but it must have been something  absolutely amazing.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 12, 2005

It is generally agreed that each and every one of us has a purpose in life. But just  hanging out  is more of a method than a purpose, so I am going with the notion that Kitty's purpose in life is to distribute love.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 11, 2005

It was a peaceful day at Kittyland until a bag of groceries fell off the counter.   Kitty immediately hightailed it outside to safety.   I went out and assured her that everything was cool, and she warily came back in.   Later, I tried to sneak in another bag of groceries, but she saw me and prudently hightailed it outside again.   Eventually she came back in, this time more wet than dry, but my actions in tearing off two paper towels from the roll were apparently too violent for her, and she hightailed it outside again.   A little later she returned and I got her dried off, and an offering of corn helped restore her nerves.   By evening she seemed completely back to normal, but before we snuggled she looked piercingly into my eyes, as if to figure out if I was safe to associate with.
Here she is,  waiting for the second shoe to drop.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 10, 2005

Kitty usually knows exactly what she wants, and when she has a complaint she lets me know.   But I still haven't heard any complaints out of her about this yucky weather, so I assume that she realizes that it really isn't my fault.   Here she is, our little feline barometer, with her head stuck out of her  cat door  checking out the conditions.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 9, 2005

KITTY HAS NEWS:  Don has a brand new website up on the web:   www.photoarrow.com/sp   If you love eroded rocks and crashing waves, you will undoubtedly love this website featuring Salt Point.
And, as long as we are doing shameless self promotion, you might also want to check out three other sites; equally new and beautiful:
http://photoarrow.com/sf   San Francisco
http://photoarrow.com/lc   Lagunitas Creek
http://photoarrow.com/pl   Point Lobos
And yes, Kitty, as primary resident of my lap, was right here to help and offer advice during all phases of editing and production...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 8, 2005

 I saw her standing there  might be the title of a Beatles tune, but yes,
 I saw her standing there, but the question at the time was why?...
After all, she had just eaten a luxury dinner of every one of her favorite foods...   but there she was, I saw her standing there...
The mystery was solved when she climbed on-board for a snooze...
........................................................................
Well, she was just seventeen,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare,
So how could I dance with another,
Oh when I saw her standing there
Well she looked at me,
And I, I could see,
That before too long I’d fall in love with her,
She wouldn’t dance with another,
Oh when I saw her standing there.
Well my heart went zoom as I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine.
Oh we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before to long I fell in love with her,
Now I’ll never dance with another,
Oh when I saw her standing there.
Well my heart went zoom as I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine.
Oh we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her,
Now I’ll never dance with another,
Oh since I saw her standing there.
Oh since I saw her standing there.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 7, 2005

It seems as if she should know, so from time to time I check with Kitty about the prospects for peace.   She seems concerned and worried...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 6, 2005

Kitty insists on having the  proper amount of love  added to her food...   We start with a sprig of fresh love, chop it finely, and sprinkle it in.   Yum.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 5, 2005

And it is perhaps not beyond a stretch of the imagination, that in earlier times, Kitty may have been spewed up from mighty seas by a large fish.

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 4, 2005

Kitty and I are a team.   We advertise our act as  the dynamic duo,   but somehow Kitty always manages to get top billing...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 3, 2005

If Kitty could read, she would be reading Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. It's a story about George and Lennie, but with a stretch of the imagination it could have just as easily been about Don and Kitty.   The disturbing part of this is that Kitty probably thinks I am Lennie; the "lesser" in brains and skill of the two, but of course I might see it the other way around...

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 2, 2005

Little Orphan Annie began life in a home for orphans run by Miss Asthma, a dour, severe disciplinarian.   Annie had been an occupant of the home since infancy.   When later asked, the first thing she remembered, she replied, "Bein' in th' "Home" and how mean Miss Asthma was.   I guess I must have been there, right from th' time I was born, almost."     waif

          Kitty, the blog animal         January 1, 2005

I lectured Kitty that in 2005 I was going to be in charge around here.
So now, if only just for a brief moment, I seem to have the upper-hand, but somehow I know it won't last...     happy new year
