Kitty, the blog animal         July 15, 2004

Kitty loves for me to spend time with her outside.   She follows me around like a little puppy-dog, and usually stays within the length of an arm so that she may receive her strokes and pets.   The only problem with this is that I need Kitty to be about five feet away from the camera to bring her into focus, so failing that, what we get is a  blur.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 14, 2004

I've never been a parent, so it's probably not my perogative to judge, but I'm guessing that cats are much more fun to raise than kids.   Kitty has two-and-a-half years to go before she evolves into a teenager, so for the time being, she has a cooperative and non-spiteful attitude.   I was slightly shocked when she came home yesterday with  green eyes, and I guess I can rock-and-roll with that, but we have a strict house rule prohibiting tatoos and body-piercing.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 13, 2004

For Kitty, life is at it's best when she can spend at least part of her afternoon with her nose curled up in the safety of the weeds.
The weeds flow, and she is along for the ride...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 12, 2004

It's summertime, and since Kitty can't unzip and slip out of her hot fur coat, the only way for her to cool down is to shed.   As a result, piles of hair are accumulating all over the place.   It's hair here, hair there, and more hair most everywhere.     furscape

Kitty, the blog animal         July 11, 2004

O.K., I will admit it...   This little cat has got me wrapped around her little claw, and it just might be because she is so soft, warm, and cute...   Please use caution, because if you look closely enough into her eyes you may see sweet promise...   To look into her eyes could chance love...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 10, 2004

For practical purposes, the current question boils down to; when's lunch?

Kitty, the blog animal         July 9, 2004

We counted them, and Kitty has all five of her basic sensory receptors.   She has hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, and tasting pretty well covered.   And obviously, she has additional sensory receptors, but those are more psychic than scientific, and much more difficult to photograph.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 8, 2004

When I see Kitty hiding out in the weeds I always wonder what primitive memory might be coursing through her brain.     at one with the jungle

Kitty, the blog animal         July 7, 2004

Kitty enjoys spending her summer afternoons chomping down on tasty weeds, and she does her best, but we've got way more weeds than she can chomp...   Of course I was just kidding, but I told her that next year, instead of getting out the weedeater, I've been toying with the idea of bringing in a flock of goats.     resident herbavore

Kitty, the blog animal         July 6, 2004

I've always wondered exactly what a "cat goddess" does, but apparently the main duty involves the judicious issuance of her  stamp of approval.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 5, 2004

If they ever start giving out awards for attentiveness, Kitty would definitely have a good shot at the top prize.   She does her best work when awake.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 4, 2004

Kitty has more than enough spare time to ponder the warm-blooded world to which she belongs, so after she finishes with that, she usually has enough time left over to ponder the surrounding world of plants, weeds, and trees.   She is, most likely, completely baffled as to why I am growing tomatoes instead of corn.       at one with her natural world

Kitty, the blog animal         July 3, 2004

Here's Kitty, in the middle of a  soft snooze.   She would prefer not to be disturbed during snooze-time, but there are times when she is just too zonked-out to protest, ...then the Kitty petting festival is on...

Kitty, the blog animal         July 2, 2004

Kitty carries around an entire repertoire of looks, and for each occasion, she can select from any one of them.   At one point I tried to name and document all of her many looks, but that soon turned into a daunting project.   We've named the look in today's photo  her supervisorial look.

Kitty, the blog animal         July 1, 2004

Kitty seems to move back-and-forth between two modes... sleep-mode, and asking-for-food-mode...   Asking-for-food-mode usually follows sleep-mode, and sleep-mode usually follows asking-for-food-mode.
it's a full-time job

Kitty, the blog animal         June 30, 2004

It's just another day in the life of Kitty, but whatever might happen today, we can rely on not only Kitty showing up on time and actually being there, but also ready and willing to strap on the supervisor's hard-hat.   But before any of that happens, the most important task is  looking cute.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 29, 2004

Kitty has many deep thoughts, but trying to figure out exactly what thought she might be thinking is no better than a guess.     deep thoughts

Kitty, the blog animal         June 28, 2004

Outsmarting Kitty is no easy task, but when she is served canned cat food all she gets is about a half-teaspoon.   We use it more as a treat than for real sustenance, but it adds a little variety to her menu.   The only fly-in-the-ointment is determining which of her three foods she wants.   It always seems to take me three guesses, which seems to be her way of cleverly engineering three foods on her plate instead of just one.   As I mentioned, outsmarting Kitty is no easy task, and in the "smarts-department" she seems to have me beat by a mile.     Yummy!

Kitty, the blog animal         June 27, 2004

In addition to her many duties as a cat, she has taken on the weighty responsibilities of an alarm clock.   Evidently her empty stomach outweighs my need for sleep.   Ignoring her is useless.   If I don't respond quickly enough, she will remind me in the most gentle way that she has sharp and piercing claws.   Here she is,  our little Ms get-him-up.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 26, 2004

Day after day, it's the same old black-and-white cat.   So for today, we've jazzed up her outfit with a bold splash of  purple and violet.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 25, 2004

Size is relative, but when you're rather small, like a cat, the remainder of the world must appear vast.   Here she is, posing in front of an  immense wildflower.          [  more wildflowers at:   www.showsnap.com  ]

Kitty, the blog animal         June 24, 2004

Kitty makes it look easy, but being a cat is not without responsibilities.   Fortunately, most of her duties can be done in  horizontal mode.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 23, 2004

Using her extensive vocabulary of body language, Kitty frequently gives us a little show, but she also knows how to do sly and mysterious things with her eyes.   Here she is,  our resident movie star.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 22, 2004

Kitty sticks pretty close to home.   She never really goes anyplace, but instead, she waits patiently for the  natural world  to swing by.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 21, 2004

I guess when you are as small and as vulnerable as a cat, it is better to be safe than sorry.   But really Kitty, you are safe.
You need not be so  deeply serious.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 20, 2004

Instinctively, cats clean themselves after meals to reduce any odors that might give away their position.   Here's Kitty,  cleaning up after lunch.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 19, 2004

Kitty has a simple wardrobe consisting of just one  tuxedo.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 18, 2004

Here she is...  enjoying a wildflower.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 17, 2004

Kitty is a terrible poker player.   Her eyes always give her away...   Those big eyes seem much more suitable for loving than for deceiving...
Little Ms big eyes

Kitty, the blog animal         June 16, 2004

If Kitty could find a way to cash in on being such a  keen observer, she would be rich.   She makes a good watch-dog, but she does that for free.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 15, 2004

I told her that they looked very nice, but what I wanted to ask was if she intended to actually wear her new colorful  corn earrings...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 14, 2004

Kibble is an indoor sport, but when it comes to corn-on-the-cob, Kitty prefers a picnic.   Table manners are low-key, the service is pretty good, and fresh sweet corn definitely tastes better at Kitty's  open-air cafe...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 13, 2004

I tried to explain that with millions and millions of cats in this world, she has a better chance of winning the lottery than getting her photo on the Whiskas bag, but she still wants to be  that cat on the package...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 12, 2004

Kitty has no wings, so her flights are short and are not much more than leaps and landings, but for a brief moment,  she accomplishes flight...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 11, 2004

Kitty has had to munch through two bags of regular old generic kibble, but praises be;  a brand new bag of the good stuff;  Whiskas, has arrived.
it's lip-smacking good

Kitty, the blog animal         June 10, 2004

I am expected to play by "Kitty's" rules, and as a rule, she wins.   The game is named food roulette, and the object is to try to figure out which food Kitty is desireous of at that particular moment.   We only have three choices; corn, kibble, or canned cat food, so it shouldn't be difficult, but I always guess wrong.   If she wasn't such a  sweet Kitty  I'd think she was trying to rig-the-odds or sway-the-bets...

Kitty, the blog animal         June 9, 2004

A few years ago Kitty decided that she wanted her kibble served in her own personal kitchen cabinet.   We found a different cabinet for dishes and cups.   Sometimes she just likes to hang-out after a munch, as it is a pretty safe place.   She has it all decorated with many pictures of herself and other semi-domesticated creatures...      Kitty's art gallery

Kitty, the blog animal         June 8, 2004

Before meals, many Christians bow their heads and fold their fingers, but Kitty is an out-and-out savage, ripping and tearing into her food without even as much as a short prayer to the provider.      feeding frenzy

Kitty, the blog animal         June 7, 2004

You might remember Twisted Sister, the screaming, heavy-metal, big-hair band from the '70's, and believe it or not, they're still around and are just as awful as ever.   But I will admit that trying to dance to their music can be a creative experience.   The music is not smooth or pretty, but Kitty seems to enjoy it...   Rock on, Kitty...      twisted Kitty

Kitty, the blog animal         June 6, 2004

A lot of men think that whiskers are a just a damn nuisance.   But on Kitty, they flow and are wildly beautiful.
We don't use it often, but in fact  her real name is Whiskers.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 5, 2004

With a few modifications, this little cat can be  a whiter shade of pale.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 4, 2004

Kitty is a good listener, but she probably finds our constant babble a bit mysterious.   We humans have words for everything, but the problem is that many words have more than one meaning...   An ear of corn is not the same as what we use for hearing.   A nose is not the same as knowing something.   A tail is not the same as an invented story.   Fur is not the same as a long distance.   Oh, I could go on, but here she is:
little Ms Big Ears

Kitty, the blog animal         June 3, 2004

I got home before Kitty yesterday, but a while later I heard her calling me from a distance.   On investigating, I found her sitting outside the front gate waiting to be let in.   Normally she uses her own special hole-in-the-fence to enter, but this time she seemed to want personal attention.   Supposedly she has this deal worked out where my duty is to cater to her every whim.   Her part of the bargain is more subtle, but I think it has something to do with regulating various combinations of  yin and yang.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 2, 2004

I should be paying more attention to my own spirituality than to Kitty's, but obviously, since she can't form scientific explanations for her world, she probably relies heavily on her own notions and instinctive faith.
Here she is  observing the higher-power of a leaf.

Kitty, the blog animal         June 1, 2004

I thought it might be an original idea, but I Googled the phrase "why don't they make mouse-flavored cat food", and I discovered that lots of people have been wondering about it too.   The main concensus seems to be that cats would probably love it, but people would be too squeemish to buy it.   Another reference said that mouse-flavored cat food had actually been developed and tested, but cats didn't like it.   If Kitty was even bigger than she is, I imagine she would enjoy tins filled with wildebeest or zebra.
a BIG cat

Kitty, the blog animal         May 31, 2004

It's a good day for a picnic, and Kitty has arrived with  stars in her eyes.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 30, 2004

The exact date is unknown, so we're allowed to celebrate Kitty's birthday at the drop-of-a-hat.   And the date keeps changing.   And we're dealing with cat-years here, which of course, if you add it all up, means more parties.     party animal...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 29, 2004

Years ago I occasionally dog-sat for a friend, and for flea control, that dog got a daily treat of a clove or two of garlic, finely chopped and mashed into a small dollop of organic peanut butter.   I got up enough courage to sample the mixture and it was really yucky, but the dog thought it was a fine treat.   It's effectiveness as a flea repellant was questionable.
Until about a year ago, flea combing Kitty once or twice a day was just something we did, without complaint, but even with an occasional flea-bombing of our house, the damn fleas just never went away.
But then, finally, I sent for a supply of Advantage®, which put a screetching halt to the fleas.   I was able to put Kitty's flea comb away and forget about those nasty little buggers.
Imidacloprid is the chemical name for Advantage®.   It's actually an insect nerve-agent, and the Germans originally developed it to keep all sorts of bugs off of their crops, but then someone suggested that if you dab it between the shoulder blades of a dog or cat (where they can't lick) it would be effective in flea control, without "much" harm to the animal.
And they were right...   it does work, but it has an incredibly obnoxious chemical smell, and it's pretty evident that Kitty doesn't like it one bit.   About six months ago, I was well into the planning phase of how I was going to sneak up on Kitty and give her another application, but then I came up with an idea for an experiment:   The plan was to apply the Advantage® to a piece of cardboard, and then shove it under our couch, thereby treating the environment instead of Kitty directly.
The experiment has been a success so far, and hopefully we won't have to put that awful chemical directly on Kitty's skin again.     a flealess cat...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 28, 2004

Yes, Kitty's corn has arrived and  the feast is on...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 27, 2004

Bell Market has corn-on-the-cob on special at 5 for 1 dollar, and Albertson's has it at 10 for 2 dollars, so the deals are equivalent, but I think Kitty would say that Albertson's has a much better deal.
I'm not quite sure what we're going to do with 10 ears of corn...
Kitty,  waiting for the corn to arrive...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 26, 2004

It isn't a regular occurance, but there are times when the expression on Kitty's face reveals just one thing, and one thing only:
there is absolutely nothing on her mind...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 25, 2004

It was a bit unusual to see Kitty sleeping-in on such a nice sunny morning, but as expected, she woke up in time to catch  lunch.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 24, 2004

It's unfortunate, but two local cats, Buffy the Calico and Zack the Siamese have gone missing, and their owners have lost-cat posters on every telephone pole in the vicinity.   I guess I should be saying a prayer that my own Kitty won't also disappear some day.   But if she does, I should be ready with an adequate selection of  portraits for her poster.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 23, 2004

Kitty has no mirror, and not even a comb, but she does have a raspy tongue perfectly engineered to help with her  fastidious grooming.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 22, 2004

Her Greenpeace I.D. card says she is just a regular black-and-white cat, but her black fur is actually a concentrated reddish-brown, visible only under strong sunlight and at the proper angle.   The overall effect in mid-afternoon sun is a blazing interplay between light and dark.
creature of contrast

Kitty, the blog animal         May 21, 2004

Kitty has already hit-the-road today, so if she isn't going to stick around and supervise, it's a green-light to show her  distorted and twisted.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 20, 2004

I'm not exactly sure which knob or lever controls Kitty's degree of softness, but soft is clearly her preferred running mode.     a soft cat

Kitty, the blog animal         May 19, 2004

Kitty is built like a streamlined express train--for speed and efficiency.   Her shape is completely devoid of square angles or hard edges, and I'm starting to wonder if the design is just a fluke of evolution, or maybe this is what the design team had in mind when they drew the first sketches...
a well rounded cat

Kitty, the blog animal         May 18, 2004

Yesterday, as I was doleing out a little pile of kibble for Kitty, I caught myself saying; "this would cost you 40 cents downtown, Kitty..."   You see, that's what my father used to say to me every time he made me a ham and cheese sandwich, or something...     Kitty cleaning up after lunch

Kitty, the blog animal         May 17, 2004

All it takes is her eyeball and the sun to be at just the right angle, and the result is an amazing and spectacular, almost psychadellic,  light-show.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 16, 2004

Kitty is pretty much in charge around here, which works out just fine, because, simply put, she is a  pretty cat.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 15, 2004

As expected, Kitty has lost her taste for the little tins of wet cat food, so we'll give it a rest for now.   A spoonful at a time was all she was getting, and she seemed to be really passionate about it at first, but now we're back to her old favorites; kibble and  corn, oh, sweet corn.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 14, 2004

Last evening Kitty and I watched the "Bootsy" episode of Leave it to Beaver.   Seems that the Beav came home to find a cat on the doorstep, and he made the mistake of feeding it, so even after Bootsy's owner located and collected her, the cat kept returning.   Ward came up with the brilliant idea of borrowing Whitey Whitney's dog to scare Bootsy off, and that worked just fine, except that Beaver fed Whitey's dog, so of course, they traded a cat problem for a dog problem.   Our own little Kitty avoids dogs like the plague.   It takes constant vigilance.     oh god, a dog

Kitty, the blog animal         May 13, 2004

Just so we don't end up on the Dr. Phill Show with Kitty in tears and me on the defensive, I thought it wouldn't hurt me all that much if I did a little preventive work here today:   Yes, Kitty, I do love you, and I thank you for all of your little kindnesses that add a glow to my life.     loveable

Kitty, the blog animal         May 12, 2004

A sunny afternoon will find Kitty stretched out in it, soaking up the warmth just like a sponge soaking up water.     sunlight, from ear to ear

Kitty, the blog animal         May 11, 2004

Apparently, in the proper order of things, Kitty's day begins at 5AM.   The main focus of business is to get fed, and even though cat-speak has no "k's" nor "b's", the message is clearly kib-ble.   After being fed, she switches to discovery-mode;  into a  colorful world of her own design.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 10, 2004

The lens of a camera is fully able (and ever so willing) to add unsharpness to something already fuzzy and soft, so the challenge of taking pictures of Kitty is to get something, or anything, to come out sharp and in focus.
sharp whiskers, soft cat

Kitty, the blog animal         May 9, 2004

Kitty is equally cute from most any angle, but I think it's safe to say  that the right side of her mug is more photogenic than her left .

Kitty, the blog animal         May 8, 2004

I have no idea where she learned "the raspberry", but when she strings a bunch of p's, b's, t's, f's, and h's together, she can manufacture 'Thppft', 'Pbththth', and sometimes even 'Thbbfpt'.   I was telling her that the British like to accompany the sound with hand jestures; such as patting the top of their head, or sticking their thumbs in their ears, but here's a picture of Kitty demonstrating her own version of a basic  raspberry.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 7, 2004

Kitty's summertime pattern is to head out for the day to places unknown.   In the '60's Nancy Sinatra popularized tall white patent-leather boots with her smash hit;  "these boots are made for walking"...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 6, 2004

Kitty is usually a good listener, but when I try to explain the wild and wooley ways of the world, her eyes quickly  glaze over...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 5, 2004

Kitty and I got a rise out of a silly episode of M.A.S.H. where, with a lot of sunshine, and a little bit of fertilizer, they were able to grow some fine ears of corn just in time for the Fourth-of-July, expecting that corn-on-the-cob would remind them of home.   But of course, Igor the cook got it all wrong and served the corn creamed.   A surprised and distraught Father Mulkahey wailed; "You didn't cream the corn did you?!!!", to which Igor threw up his hands in disgust and replied; "Well if you don't like it creamed, I'll give it to you on-the-cob next year".     corn on the cob

Kitty, the blog animal         May 4, 2004

Kitty really doesn't earn all that much babysitting, and lawns for cutting around here are few and far between, so she has figured out that the best way to earn some summer spending cash is around-the-clock enforcement of the parking meter at the front door.

Kitty, the blog animal         May 3, 2004

If it is true what they say about cleanliness being next to Godliness, Kitty just might qualify for sainthood.       rub a dub-dub

Kitty, the blog animal         May 2, 2004

At times Kitty is sharp and in focus, but other times she might not be...

Kitty, the blog animal         May 1, 2004

It's unknown why dogs take so much delight in visiting Kittyland to snoop around, but they do.   Perhaps dogs can tell that a cat lives here and curiosity gets the best of them, but no matter what their intentions, dogs soon learn they've arrived at the wrong casa.     ferocious pestbouncer
