Kitty, the blog animal         April 25, 2004

I'm guessing that just as soon as Kitty polishes off her morning corn-on-the-cob, she will be off for the day.   Somehow I get the feeling that she thinks I'm running a bed-and-breakfast, but she obviously has places to go and people to see.     bars cannot hold her

Yesterday, at long last, Kitty returned safe and sound, and I really shouldn't worry about her when she disappears for the day, because I know she has enough street-smarts take care of herself.   But of course, I freaked out about 6PM and started calling around, but the folks out at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center hadn't seen her since the Dalai Lama's last visit.   Then I remembered it was baseball season and thought she might be down at Parks and Recreation for Spring training (she plays short-stop for the San Anselmo Scrappers), but coach Claus hadn't seen her either.   But finally, and much to my relief, she returned home as the sun was going down.   And the mystery of where she disappeared to remains.

Kitty probably thinks the goofy dog who slipped past Kittyland security yesterday just might return again this morning for another terror-attack, so she is making herself scarce.   Only the god-of-cats knows where she goes to hide, or how long it will be before she feels safe enough to return, but I would bet that much of her time hiding out is spent  in prayer.

I gave Kitty a pencil and blank piece of paper, and told her to jot down anything that came to mind.   The piece of paper is still blank, but the pencil came back with an interesting series of gnaw marks, which I am assuming is some sort of cryptic cat code.       an open ear for news

I'd be in error to call her my roommate, because our relationship goes way beyond food and shelter.   We seem to have worked out a successful inter-connection between our species, and as long as Kitty is able to occupy my lap, all is well...     an adorable cat named Kitty

It was a long time ago, but I can remember being shorter than the lofty summer volunteer oats.   The feeling was one of comfort and safety, and of course it made for a rousing game of "hide-and-seek".   These fond memories surface whenever I see Kitty  hanging out in the weeds.

Tomato season at Kittyland doesn't start until the last week of May, so all we have now is a planter box lavishly ammended with chicken manure.   Kitty apparently assumes anything smelling that potent must be a toilet, and now word has gotten out--cats are arriving from blocks away--just to use the facilities.   It's out of control--I'll have to do something about it.

The official team ball at Kittyland is a simple wadded-up piece of paper.   Sometimes she bats it back to me, and other times she will amaze me with a perfect two-paw catch, but most times I just throw it and she runs and attacks.   She can play independently too, and the other day I saw her balancing the moon on her nose.

Kitty was raised with dogs, and not cats, so she has no tolerance for other cats.   Taking her picture can be tricky, as I must compenstate for the empty space where her mate, if she had one, would appear.
Otherwise, it's just an  empty space on the left side of the picture.

When I returned home in the early afternoon I thought it a bit unusual for Kitty to still be missing, but finally I realized I had accidently locked her in the basement that morning.   When I found her she was sleepy-eyed and very dusty, but she had found a comfortable and warm spot to wait out her rescue.   I tried to appologize as best I could, but Kitty really didn't seem too bothered by the incident, and after a little piece of corn everything was pretty much back to normal.     a dusty cat

I've probably told every produce-clerk in town about my cat who really loves corn.   At first they look at me like I'm some kind of a nut.   I warn them that it can get a bit messy, but everyone seems curious as to how their own cat would respond if given a treat of raw corn-on-the-cob.     devouring corn without hands or utensils

I doubt if Kitty has ever quite figured out that this is her own personal little website.   Sometimes I am able to get her to look at her own image on the screen, but she is not impressed.   And I've even tried showing her how popular she is by pulling up our "site stats";  but again, she remains unimpressed.   So, before she lets me join the club, I just might have to figure out more precisely where this little cat is coming from...

I was expecting that it would take Kitty time to get used to our new microwave, and now, after a week she seems to be less paniced by it's noises and robot-like movements, but it may take a few more days of caution until she determines it is harmless.   Before I had unpacked and brought it in (and before Kitty found out that the box contained a robotic monster), she adopted the box as her own.
Yes, Kitty, you may have the box.

The sight of the ungodly WeedWhacker sent her to a distant hiding place.   Eventually she returned, obviously upset that her overgrown, yet pristine jungle had been so ruthlessly reduced to stubble.

Kitty and I share a fondness for the simple pleasures in life.   Just give us an overgrowth of weeds, the sun at the back of our heads, and an unhurried Saturday afternoon.   It doesn't get much better than this.
That's our formula for a  front row seat  in the theater of life.

If my understanding is correct, cats are unable to synthesize vitamin-A from sunlight and beta-carotene as we humans do, so their primary source of vitamin-A is meat.   And since Kitty hasn't caught a bird or mouse all winter long, I'm trusting that her vitamin enriched kibble has enough vitamin-A to keep her eyes working and her juices flowing.   Corn has a small amount of vitamin-A, but not enough to get excited about.   I suppose I could buy her canned cat food, and I've tried it in the past, but her enthusiasm seems to diminish after the first can.
Meanwhile, here she is,  hanging out in the weeds,  taking a break.

I think we're going to have to send Kitty down to Trim-Spa to work off a few pounds.   All these years of eating raw corn-on-the-cob has definitely filled her out, and although she isn't quite as dumpy as Anna Nicolle Smith's "before" picture, a little bit of working-out might be good for Kitty's health.     do I look fat?

Over the years Kitty has assembled a collection of special places that she calls her own.   One good place is half-in and half-out of her cat-door, and another luxurious place is on my lap,   But without a doubt, her favorite spot to hang-out, and munch kibble, is  her kitchen cupboard.

Cats use their whiskers as feelers in navigating tight spaces.   Whiskers also serve as vibration sensitive antennae to help with hunting.   But beyond utility, Kitty wears them well, and they are exquisitely beautiful.   They give her kisser a real sense of bravado...     whiskers

I should never have admitted to using Photoshop, because it will always raise the suspicion that any unusual photo of Kitty might have been faked, but here is an unembellished photo of Kitty,  with one turquoise eye and one brown eye.   We're going on a theory that turquoise was produced when 2 parts of blue from the sky;  mixed with 3 parts of green from Spring weeds;  and then mixed with 5 parts from the white of her eye.

Kitty is a left-coast cat, so she would be hard-pressed to name all four seasons.   We've just emerged from yucky weather into an early blast of summertime temperatures.   The poison oak glistens...   Critters of all descriptions scurry everywhere...   Kitty's job is to  soak it all up...

It's that old question:   Is the glass half full or half empty?   Someone with a positive attitude will see the glass as half full, while someone that has a negative nature will see it as half empty.   Here's a picture of Kitty with her own variation on the concept.   It's called  being half here, or half there.

Hanging out with Kitty in the great out-of-doors is kind of like going on a nature hike.   Our resident naturalist has identified all of our edible greens. Our favorite cooking program is Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on the Food Channel, and last night Kitty and I sat spellbound as he told of the ancient Aztecs, who's corn was so important to them that they made regular human sacrifices to their God of Corn.   And although I have always suspected that Kitty may have some Aztec blood coursing through her veins, she has assured me that she will not make a human sacrifice out of me, as long as I keep bringing her corn...       Kitty, lapping it up

The only drawback to taking Kitty's picture is that she knows much more about photography than me.   I know she is only trying to be helpful, but my camera is completely automatic and takes color pictures, so Kitty, I really don't need a complete discourse on the zone system every time I point-and-shoot.     Here she is, sitting for her portrait.
