Kitty, the blog animal         March 24, 2004

Over the years Kitty has assembled a collection of special places that she calls her own.   One good place is half-in and half-out of her cat-door, and another luxurious place is on my lap,   But without a doubt, her favorite spot to hang-out, and munch kibble, is  her kitchen cupboard.

Kitty's picnics don't include table-manners.   Using a sideways approach, she ferociously  tears into her lunch  like an attacking sidewinder snake.

On these vibrant and sunny days, Kitty sets her dials and knobs to the electric  snap, crackle, and pop  of her little green and weedy world.

It's nice to see Kitty spending more time outdoors.   She enjoys getting soft and pliable in the warm afternoon sun.    Springtime has arrived.

Cats use their whiskers as feelers in navigating tight spaces.   Whiskers also serve as vibration sensitive antennae to help with hunting.   But beyond utility, Kitty wears them well, and they are exquisitely beautiful.   They give her kisser a real sense of bravado...     whiskers

The humor of it escapes her, but here she is  with green Photoshop eyes.

I should never have admitted to using Photoshop, because it will always raise the suspicion that any unusual photo of Kitty might have been faked, but here is an unembellished photo of Kitty,  with one turquoise eye and one brown eye.   We're going on a theory that turquoise was produced when 2 parts of blue from the sky;  mixed with 3 parts of green from Spring weeds;  and then mixed with 5 parts from the white of her eye.

Kitty is a left-coast cat, so she would be hard-pressed to name all four seasons.   We've just emerged from yucky weather into an early blast of summertime temperatures.   The poison oak glistens...   Critters of all descriptions scurry everywhere...   Kitty's job is to  soak it all up...

In honor of it being St. Patrick's day, Photoshop and I have joined creative juices to make Kitty's little world on this day,  just a little bit greener.

It's that old question:   Is the glass half full or half empty?   Someone with a positive attitude will see the glass as half full, while someone that has a negative nature will see it as half empty.   Here's a picture of Kitty with her own variation on the concept.   It's called  being half here, or half there.

Hanging out with Kitty in the great out-of-doors is kind of like going on a nature hike.   Our resident naturalist has identified all of our edible greens. Most look like volunteer-oats and weeds to me, but she insisted that I help her make little signs, including Green Orach, Tat-Sot, Perella Red, Frisee, Watercrest, White Flowering Kale, Red Romaine, Chervil, Mustard Greens, Red Flowering Kale, Kale, Romaine, Mizuna, Arugula, Red Chard, Peacock Kale, Oak Leaf Lettuce, Asian Mustard, Chard, Sorrel, Red Orach, Dandelion Green, Endive, Radicchio, Spinach, Beet Leaf, Tango Lettuce, and just plain old Salinas Valley Iceberg Lettuce.       life is a salad

As human beings, we are supposed to show confidence and poise, but of course, beneath it all, we might be just as  amazed and curious  as Kitty.

Our favorite cooking program is Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on the Food Channel, and last night Kitty and I sat spellbound as he told of the ancient Aztecs, who's corn was so important to them that they made regular human sacrifices to their God of Corn.   And although I have always suspected that Kitty may have some Aztec blood coursing through her veins, she has assured me that she will not make a human sacrifice out of me, as long as I keep bringing her corn...       Kitty, lapping it up

Kitty's domain doesn't extend too far beyond the property lines, but she uses a kindly old dog named Will, who lives across the street, to let her know, with a soft bark, when she needs to be aware of anything.

I can remember being small.   The world was an overwhelmingly large jungle, and I suppose that Kitty, being built rather close to the ground, must see it that way too...       hiding out in the vines

I used to think I was the only sane person in my family, but that was before I began trying to get a reaction out of Kitty by showing her pictures of herself on the monitor.   She is willing to look, but I have never been able to get a rise out of her, even with  stretched Photoshop ears.

Kitty and I are thoroughly ready for Spring and Summer.   Yesterday we got a preliminary teaser, and Kitty was  right there to soak it up.

Most everything in Kitty's life is structured and carefully designed to jive with the natural order of things, but sometimes she gets things turned around and mixed up.   She insisted, but I tried my best to explain that standard procedure is to get arrested before getting  mug shots.

I should have minded my own business, but I accidently overheard Kitty's phone conversation with someone about some really tasty weed.   I didn't hear the "s" on the end, so of course I thought she was referring to that notorious substance, but no, she meant the common garden varieties of weeds so abundant this time of year.    in the garden, munching a weed

Odds are that nobody remembers actress Norma Desmond, nor the classic 1950's movie named "Sunset Boulevard", but that's the origin of this familiar line:  "I'm ready for my close-up now, Mr. DeMille".

The only drawback to taking Kitty's picture is that she knows much more about photography than me.   I know she is only trying to be helpful, but my camera is completely automatic and takes color pictures, so Kitty, I really don't need a complete discourse on the zone system every time I point-and-shoot.     Here she is, sitting for her portrait.

When Kitty asked for her birthday money and borrowed the car keys, it became obvious that she was headed into town to get her head chromed again.   I wanted to stop her, but I remembered how it was for me at that age, so I realized that I just had to let her go.     a chromed dome

As close as I can figure, Kitty is just about exactly ten years old.   We've made March 1 the official date, and we'll be celebrating with a party!!!
We'll be serving corn instead of cake.
